Registration edition 2021 starts

The registration for the 45th edition of the TCS Amsterdam Marathon is opened since today. Sports organisation Le Champion is confident that the fall marathon on Sunday the 17th of October 2021 can take place in a safe way. The marathon is known for its fast and appealing course alongside the many Amsterdam highlights and the start and finish in the Olympic Stadium. Besides the classic distance also the Mizuno Half Marathon and the TCS 8K are on the program.

The TCS Amsterdam Marathon is in possession of the Platinum Label of the World Athletics and is normally the most international sports event of the Netherlands. The combination of sports, art and culture attracts the foreign runners. Therefore in March 2019 there were at least 45.000 participants form 140 different countries at the start. The course of the diverse distances take runners alongside multiple sights, like the Rijksmuseum, the Vondelpark, the Amstel and the Zuidas. The finish for all distances is at the iconic Olympic Stadium from 1928.

In 2020 the TCS Amsterdam Marathon was cancelled due to the coronavirus. As an alternative the Virtual TCS Amsterdam Marathon was organised. Because of the Virtual Run app of title sponsor TCS runners could choose their own running moment and course, anywhere in the world. Over 6.000 runners from 104 different countries participated at this special edition.

Marathon weekend
At the marathon weekend on the 15th, 16th, and 17th of October there are three main parts, the full marathon, the half marathon and the 8K, a fixed value on the program. In which way these parts are organised will depend on the possible corona measurements at that time. For the side events, like the Kids Run, Good Morning City Run and the Marathon Expo, we are looking into the fact if these events fit in the adjusted program. For foreign runners it applies that is it difficult to predict if travelling to Amsterdam in October will be possible.

René Wit, Race Director of the TCS Amsterdam Marathon: ‘’It may be clear that we can’t wait to see runners back in action on the marathon course through our beautiful capital city. We realise that there are a few important steps need to be taken in order to get the coronavirus in control, but we are optimistic about the possibilities in the fall. Together with peers we are preparing the return of physical events for months, we presume that after this summer this is possible again in a responsible way. The vaccination speed is however a crucial factor in this.’’

KWF Run against cancer
The TCS Amsterdam Marathon will cooperate for the coming edition with the KWF Dutch Cancer Society. The charity that is connected to the marathon for the past ten years, Amsterdam UMC Cancer Center Amsterdam, also remains involved. Besides the option to do a voluntary donation at the registration module, the organisation also summons participants to start a sponsor action via the ‘KWF Run against cancer’ platform. All donations will be used via KWF for cancer research at the Amsterdam UMC Cancer Center Amsterdam.

‘’We are very happy with this sportive collaboration and really hope that numerous runners will run for a lot of money to realise the next break throughs in cancer research,’’ stated by Johan van de Gronden, director KWF.
